HISTORY
The Native Plant Center was founded in 1998 as a program of the Westchester Community College Foundation and the first affiliate of the Lady Bird Johnson Wildflower Center in Austin, Texas.
Mrs. Johnson wrote at the time:
“What you are endeavoring to do here to educate people about the benefits of using natives in planned landscapes and how to grow and care for them gives me great joy. I hope all who come here will find their pleasure in our living world enlarged and enriched.”

The following year, in 1999, Lady Bird Johnson and her daughters, Lynda Johnson Robb and Luci Baines Johnson, visited the Westchester Community College campus for the dedication of The Native Plant Center’s demonstration garden named for the First Lady.
If you attended the ceremony with Mrs. Johnson, please share your story and photos with us by email.

Mrs. Johnson was known as the “Environmental First Lady” and is credited with inspiring several conservation initiatives during her husband’s administration. The Native Plant Center has been privileged to uphold Mrs. Johnson’s legacy and to be a community resource and education center for the use of native plants.
